2012 has gotten off to a strange start. I tend to overbook in the Fall, burn out, put my camera down for December, then come January I dust it off and am able to slowly re-enter the world of photography and business. This year has been weird. I can’t quite bring myself to go grab my camera just for the fun of it. I miss it. I miss the magic I’m able to create with it. I miss the joy of clicking … and knowing I just captured something really beautiful. I’m struggling a little with where I want to take this business. I’m at a point where I’m thrilled to be taking photos of my families, I can’t wait to dig in over the next month and a half with the families I already have booked. I ADORE capturing families. I do. It’s one of my favorite things ever. And I’m not done doing that. BUT I have this nagging feeling that I want this to be more. I want this business to have more purpose. I’m really happy with the service I provide, I’m happy with my price points, I’m happy with the work load … but there’s more. There’s something else. I need to explore some things. Wrestle through the details of this business. Pray for direction, focus, what is this “more” that is tugging at my heart? Frankly I’m a little frustrated and restless and I’m not sure what the root of it is. Part of it may be that I’m just human … wrestling with some personal issues, part of it may be the tension of working from home and also wanting to be a mom who is present. A lot of it is that I don’t really know where I’m taking this business … I feel like I’m lacking true vision, aside from capturing the heart of my families which I think will always be a core piece of my business.

I’m going to take a little time off from blogging to do some re-evaluating, business planning, praying, soul searching, remolding, piecing together my priorities, purposes, focus. I’ll post client session sneak peeks but that’s the limit for a bit. Until I figure out what I want this space to be … molding and reforming … I’ll be back … hopefully with a new sense of direction and purpose!

In the meantime. As of today, there are still two mini-session time slots open. And I’d love to see you over the summer for the SLR workshops … I’m thinking of offering a photography workshop for kids as well. Email me if you want more info using the contact link above.

Something I’d love to dabble more in is teaching and workshops. I hear again and again from people that they have a beautiful camera that they don’t know how to use. I love the idea of equipping people to understand the creative controls on their cameras giving them the tools to gain full access to this amazing <del>toy</del> tool! The feedback I’ve gotten from past mini-workshops or teaching environments have been very very positive. I think I have a good way with words and can put complicated technical concepts into laymen’s terms that anyone can understand. Come join us for a fun morning of learning more about your SLR!

We’ll be meeting in a cute coffee shop, Kouks Vintage Cafe, giving us an opportunity to learn in a cozy environment and then use the area indoors and out to practice what we learned.

Our first hour together will be spent going over basic exposure giving you a better understanding of how your creative settings affect your images. The second hour will be spent practicing what we learned with hands on photos and lots of time for question and answers. You’ll walk away with a much better understanding of what your camera can do and how to use it in different situations. There are a lot of models of SLRs out there so please plan to bring your camera manual so you can find the settings we’ll be talking about.

Class size will be limited to 8 people so I can answer questions and give students my best attention. If this is very successful I’d love to offer it again and maybe expand to add other workshops such as taking great shots of your kids, natural light photography, and more!

2 hour SLR workshop is $45 . non-refundable but you can transfer it to a friend

Use the “contact” link at the top of the blog to let me know you want to join us! I’ll send you an invoice to secure your spot! Registration deadline is Friday, February 10th!

I had a little blog crash scare … I really do love technology, however, when you have to spend money to keep it up to date so it doesn’t crash because your blog theme is just a wee two years old … that really gets my goat. It will remain a bare bones bloggy for a bit … just enough to share session peeks. But there is a whole slew of fun little gadgets that I didn’t really need but i sure am going to enjoy … just after I get through the fall shooting frenzy!

Inspired :: a newsletter by Julie Kittredge Art & Photography :: designed to infuse a breath of creative inspiration

I chose the name “inspired” for my newsletter (which goes out tomorrow morning) for several reasons. First, it’s the crux of being a creative … for me, when I’m inspired I get excited about something and I need to create it. It could be a vision, an idea, a message – anything. ‘Inspired’ is also a word that keeps on cropping up in my life, sort-of like a theme. Friends and strangers alike send me notes or comments regarding being inspired by me (that’s very humbling). Sometimes its my creative outlets that inspire them, sometimes it’s my intentional lifestyle, sometimes it’s my insights, sometimes it’s how I share my heart, sometimes it’s my optimistic perspective, sometimes it’s my faith. I am always humbled by their comments, and a little surprised – after all I’m just living life the way I see it. But at the same time, I know that one of the driving forces behind what I do, how I live, and what I share is that I want to be an inspiration! I want to inspire others to make stuff, to be creative, to keep art on the front burner rather than push it to the back where it so often ends up. I want to share my life with others in ways that helps make them better people, ways that makes them believe that they too can follow their hearts. I want other’s to know it’s okay to be different, that’s it better not to worry about what other’s think but to do what you know is right for you. I want other’s to know that we all struggle. Everyone is struggling with something, and it’s not easy. It’s okay to wonder if God hears you and to ask questions. I want others to know that they too can have a faith that carries them through the hard times and gives them a reason to celebrate the little victories and the big victories in the good times. I know where those victories come from. I also know the source of my perseverance – if anyone were to ask me how I get through some of the circumstances my life has brought my way – it’s directly related to my faith in a loving Father whom I know will use these experiences in great creative ways down the road and consistently shows me his love in the midst of that hard stuff. I’ve learned to wait, and not fret. I’ve learned to do what I can, and not worry about what’s out of my hands. I’ve learned to trust Him, and I’ve seen Him prove that He’s trustworthy again and again.

Follow whatever it is that is knocking on your heart deep down – take a tiny step toward it today.

The dishes can wait. Photographing the kids in the fall sunshine and color … that can’t wait. It will pass, they will grow, and the dishes will still be there. Every.single.day. So … as I grow with this little flegling newsletter – I invite you to join me – and I’ll try to inspire you along the way!

{Side note: Thanks Jules for encouraging me to use this as ‘my word.’ It’s so appropriate – your suggestion hit the nail on the head and tied all the loose ends together that were leading me this way.}
